What are the key challenges you face in your position? Mr. Pedigo stressed that planning, especially with regard to financial planning, is the biggest challenge he faces being in a seasonal, luxury, and unpredictable retail business. This is directly related to the text in Chapter 5. (page 185) The text states that a quality plan states where resources will come from and how they will be deployed. Jewelry retail sales, especially in our current economy are incredibly unpredictable. It is difficult to allocate resources for future use when the business owner is unsure about future sales figures. 9. What recommendations would you make for someone trying to get a job? Mr. Pedigo would recommend that current job seekers would expect to work their way to the top. It seems that recent graduates have more of a sense of entitlement now and expect to obtain higher level and higher paying jobs right away. I related this most closely to the text in chapter 12. (page 469) The text states that there are two basic types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Extrinsic motivation comes from the rewards that are linked to job performance, such as a paycheck. Mr. Pedigo seemed to be stressing the importance of intrinsic motivation, which comes from the personal satisfaction of the work itself. Employees should work hard for the sake of the job, not just the paycheck. 10. What do you wish you had known in your first job? Mr. Pedigo responded, “People don’t always do what they say they are going to.” Mr. Pedigo had some situations early in his career when he found that a colleague of his was engaging in dishonest business practices. He had to make a choice to sever the business relationship before the colleague’s behavior tarnished Mr. Pedigo’s own reputation and good name.
